The grooves and calluses on Skeet’s fingertips tell one story, the plaintive and soothing tones of Deborah’s voice tell another. Skeet and Deborah were introduced by chance….something about canal boats and living in Spain, the usual tales of musos and hippies.
The vocal mix is between Skeet’s gravelly melody and harmony below Deborah’s dreamy and pure, round tones. But then it would be “Pure,” not having been dragged around the pubs and clubs for decades.
Hard to believe, but Deborah is a rookie to the stage and studio. The very experience that burnished and honed Skeet’s guitar and songwriting, the years of graft, the toil, the desire to bring music to stages big and small is the demon of “Wear and tear” that Deborah’s voice has been sheltered from.
The recording sessions for “Venus And The Crescent Moon” began in December 2019 after intense songwriting sessions from Skeet and intensely creative leaps and bounds.
Mandola and banjo featured alongside Skeet’s legendary guitar prowess but the vocals never failed to assert this an album of, well, beautiful singing. Skeet has shared stages with Jackie Oats, The Oyster Band, Wolfstone, Heidi Talbot, Dougie Maclean, Booker T., Lee Scratch Perry, Bellowhead, Rodrigo y Gabriella and the Easy All Stars. Recording projects over the years have seen his involvement in several albums both in the Uk and U.S. Sierra-Hurtt- Stranger, We Can Do Anything, Bear Beats Band-Right By Your Side and Gary Edward Jones, The Cabinet Maker, Bang Bang. The intriguingly masterful results upon “Venus And The Crescent Moon” could be summed up as a collaboration of long experience and a voice fresh out of shrink wrap.
This is assured original music, wondrously performed and spontaneously emerging.
